Making Racing Games Feel Good Without Buttons
Racing games have a hard job on touchscreens. There's no steering wheel, no analog trigger, just glass. The lazy solution is tilt-only controls, and they almost always feel vague.
The games that nail it, like Neon Drift Circuit, give you choices. On-screen buttons with generous hit zones, optional tilt, and a drift system simple enough to master with one thumb. The trick is designing the racing around the limits instead of fighting them.
I've come to prefer arcade racers on mobile precisely because they lean into this. When the whole game is built around a satisfying boost-and-drift loop, you stop missing a wheel entirely.
If a mobile racer forces tilt on you with no alternative, that's usually my cue to look elsewhere.
